How Acupuncture Works
Acupuncture is based on the principle that health depends on the balanced flow of qi (pronounced “chee”)—the vital energy that circulates through a network of pathways called meridians throughout your body. When this energy flow becomes blocked or imbalanced due to stress, injury, poor nutrition, or other factors, health issues can arise.
During treatment, Laura inserts hair-thin, sterile needles at specific points along these meridians to stimulate energy flow and trigger physiological responses, including:
- Release of endorphins and other natural pain-relieving chemicals
- Increased circulation to injured or affected areas
- Reduction of inflammation and muscle tension
- Regulation of the nervous system and stress response
- Enhanced immune function and cellular repair
- Hormonal balancing and endocrine regulatory effects
Acupuncture is backed by modern research
Modern research continues to validate acupuncture’s effectiveness through scientific studies examining its impact on neurotransmitters, microcirculation, and the body’s complex feedback loops and regulatory systems. What ancient practitioners understood through observation, we now confirm through measurable physiological responses—making acupuncture a bridge between traditional wisdom and contemporary healthcare.
Acupuncture is recognized by the World Health Organization and the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). Read about Acupuncture on the NIH.

Your Acupuncture Experience with Laura Farb
Comprehensive Initial Consultation
Your healing journey begins with a thorough 75-minute initial consultation and treatment. During this session, Laura will:
- Listen carefully to your health history and current concerns
- Perform traditional diagnostic assessments, including pulse and tongue evaluation
- Discuss your health goals and answer any questions about acupuncture
- Explain how acupuncture can address your specific condition
- Create a customized treatment plan tailored to your unique needs
- Provide your first acupuncture treatment, usually with front and back treatment, and including moxibustion
This comprehensive approach ensures that your care is precisely targeted to your individual health pattern rather than simply addressing generic symptoms.
What to Expect During Treatment
Your first visit for acupuncture is up to 1 hour and 15 minutes. Regular treatment visits are 1 hour.
Acupuncture sessions with Laura are both therapeutic and deeply relaxing. After a brief check-in about your progress, you’ll rest comfortably on a treatment table while Laura gently inserts the ultra-thin, sterile needles at specific points determined by your treatment plan and Laura stays with you to enhance your session with other treatments.
Complementary treatments may include:
- Moxibustion (warming therapy)
- Cupping therapy
- Gua Sha
- Electro-acupuncture (extra charge if needed)
- Auricular (ear) acupuncture
- front and back treatments
After the needles are removed, you’ll likely feel relaxed yet energized. Many patients report improved sleep, enhanced mood, and reduced pain immediately following treatment, with benefits building progressively through your treatment series.
Your Customized Treatment Plan
Acupuncture works cumulatively, with each session building on previous treatments to create lasting results. Based on your specific condition and health goals, Laura will recommend an appropriate treatment frequency and duration:
- Acute conditions typically respond quickly, often requiring 4-8 treatments over a few weeks
- Chronic conditions generally need more sustained care, with 8-12 treatments providing significant improvement
- Preventative wellness care may involve monthly or seasonal sessions to maintain optimal health
As your condition improves, treatments are gradually spaced further apart until you reach optimal functioning. Many patients choose to continue with maintenance sessions to sustain their results and support ongoing wellness.
Patient Success Stories
Laura Farb is a cut above.
She is very knowledgeable and asks a lot of questions and is very deliberate in her needle placement. She has been tremendously helpful to me and issues I have from previous surgeries. I have seen a few acupuncturists in my time, and Laura is the one I recommend the most.
So impressed
Laura has been treating me through Chinese medicine/acupuncture since August of 2016. Upon meeting Laura, I was so impressed by her intelligence, hospitality and sincere nature. Laura genuinely cares for her clients/patients in a way that no other health care practitioner has–she goes above and beyond to provide holistic remedies that are effective. Laura has helped me with chronic pain, addressing the source but also suggesting appropriate nutrition and supplements. As a result of my acupuncture treatments with Laura, I have sustained more energy with more tools to manage my symptoms.
My career can be stressful at times and my weekly acupuncture appointments provide a steady calmness between the rush of it all. She has helped me with managing everything from abdominal pain to the common cold. Furthermore, Laura has helped me build connections with other holistic physicians in the Bay Area. Laura has provided a listening ear, laughter, relief and friendship. I highly recommend a visit with Laura Farb!
Have not had to take mainstream medications
Laura is a quality acupuncturist and nutritionist. She is professional, experienced, articulate and dedicated. I have had issues with pain, allergies and congestion. Her treatments help me very much. The various herbs that she has prescribed help my congestion, my overall health and immune system. I have not had to take mainstream medications for allergies and congestion. She is also teaching me about good nutrition. Laura is genuinely caring, patient, kind and understanding. She cares about my overall health, physical, emotional and spiritual. She has helped me to feel much better. I truly appreciate Laura.
Conditions have greatly improved, lost 30 lbs.
Over the last two years I have run into some problems with lower back pain, knee pain, allergies, and anxiety, among other things. Through a combination of acupuncture and herbal prescriptions, all of these conditions have greatly improved. Laura has also changed the way I view nutrition, and helped me understand the way that certain foods can alter your mind and body. I have lost about thirty pounds since making a few specific changes to my diet in the last year, and feel more energized and focused each day. Last but not least, Laura is one of the kindest people you will ever meet, and I have yet to meet a single person who doesn’t think highly of her.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is acupuncture painful?
Most patients are surprised by how comfortable acupuncture is. The needles used are extremely thin—about the width of a human hair—and insertion is typically painless or feels like a momentary tiny pinch. Once placed, you may experience a dull ache, tingling, or warm sensation, which are all positive signs of qi movement. Many patients find treatments so relaxing they fall asleep during their sessions.
How many treatments will I need?
Treatment frequency and duration depend on your specific condition, its severity, and how long you’ve had it. Acute conditions often respond quickly, sometimes with significant improvement in 4-6 sessions. Chronic conditions typically require more treatments, often 8-12 sessions, to achieve lasting results. During your initial consultation, Laura will provide a clear treatment plan with expected timeframes based on your individual situation.
Do you take insurance?
Laura does not accept insurance for any services. A superbill is provided upon request.
Can acupuncture be combined with conventional medical treatments?
Absolutely. Acupuncture works excellently as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical care. Many patients find that acupuncture enhances the effectiveness of their other treatments while reducing side effects. Laura is experienced in coordinating care with physicians and other healthcare providers to ensure an integrated approach to your health.
What should I do before and after my acupuncture session?
For optimal results, eat a light meal 1-2 hours before your appointment, wear loose, comfortable clothing, and avoid alcohol or intense exercise immediately before treatment. After your session, stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity for the remainder of the day if possible, and pay attention to your body’s responses, as these provide valuable information for your follow-up treatments.
